How we ranked these tools

We compared these four on public documentation and vendor pages in August 2026, on a single axis: per-number traceability. Disclosure: deciqAI is our own product — it appears on this list, it competes for some of the same budget, and its "main limitation" is the bluntest here because it is not tax-prep automation at all.

Traceability, not accuracy, is the axis

A vendor-reported 99% accuracy figure means roughly one wrong number per hundred — and no indication of which one. Traceability is the property that makes review cheap: when every figure shows the document and line it came from, a reviewer's time goes to the numbers that matter instead of re-keying everything to check. The tools here are compared on that property, not on whose percentage is higher.

What happens to numbers the AI couldn't source

This is where architectures genuinely differ. Some tools fill their best guess and rely on the human review pass to catch it; some route the document to human data entry; deciqAI's engine refuses to fill the field at all and queues it for confirmation. For tax work, the failure mode that matters is a confident wrong number that survives review — so we say explicitly what each tool does when it doesn't know.

Both are the vendor's own figures: reasonable to take seriously, unreasonable to take on faith — pilot it against your actual client mix and count what the validation step catches.

Main limitation: The accuracy number is vendor-reported, and validation is a human pass: a wrong number that looks plausible still depends on the preparer noticing it. Traceability exists at the review step rather than traveling with each figure downstream.

It predates the current AI wave, which is precisely why its review workflow is the most worked-out — this is what traceability looks like after fifteen years of tax seasons.

Main limitation: Built for the Thomson Reuters ecosystem (UltraTax CS, GoSystem Tax RS) and priced for volume; a five-person firm doing two hundred returns is not who it's shaped for. Documents it can't recognize fall back to human data entry.

Main limitation: Only meaningful inside the CCH Axcess suite. Wolters Kluwer publishes its own accuracy claims for K-1 processing; as with every vendor number on this page, test on your own packages rather than quoting the brochure.

The architectural difference: deciqAI's model is only allowed to read — it copies balances off statements with the currency and original text attached. Everything downstream is deterministic code: FBAR and Form 8938 threshold tests, penalty exposure, all computed from statutory tables where every figure cites its source (31 CFR 1010.350, IRC §6038D, 31 U.S.C. §5321) so a reviewer can trace any number back in seconds. A balance the model can't read is null, never zero — and the engine structurally cannot conclude "no filing required" while any balance is unknown. Is 99% extraction accuracy good enough for tax work?

Do the arithmetic: a return touching 300 numbers at 99% accuracy contains roughly three wrong ones, with no marker on which three. That's why the axis that matters is traceability — how cheaply a human can check any given number — and what the tool does with numbers it couldn't source. A vendor-reported percentage is a starting point for your own pilot, not a substitute for it.

How do I verify that an AI tax tool isn't making numbers up?

Three tests. First, trace: pick five figures from its output and ask where each came from — a real tool shows you the document and line. Second, starve it: feed a package with one unreadable balance and see whether it fills a guess, or surfaces the gap. Third, check who does the math: extraction models misread; the dangerous failure is a model that also computes. What does a confirmation queue actually do?

It inverts the default. Most extraction tools fill every field and rely on review to catch errors; a confirmation queue means fields the engine couldn't trace to a source are listed as open questions instead of being filled. Is it safe to put client tax data into AI tools?

Ask every vendor the same four questions in writing: Is client data used to train models? What's the retention and deletion policy? Who at the vendor can access it? Is there a security attestation (SOC 2 or equivalent)? A vendor that answers slowly on any of them has answered. Then match the tool's lane to what you actually send it — a determination tool needs statements, not your whole client file.
