Instead & Corvee alternatives, by what you actually need.
First, the thing most lists get wrong: Corvee is now an Instead company — corvee.com redirects, and they are no longer two products to weigh against each other. What's left depends on which half of planning you need. Plans get produced but never executed? That's deciqAI. Advisor-facing plans across a household book? Holistiplan, from $749/yr. An operating business, answer in the books? Tax Planner Pro. Already in ProConnect? Intuit Tax Advisor. Planning inside your practice platform? Canopy.

Quick answer
- deciqAI — the pick when the failure isn't the plan, it's what happens after — each item carries the dollar figure, the specific action, who does it, and the signature step that closes it. Exposure only; it never prints a projected saving. Chat free, from $30/mo.
- Holistiplan — the pick for advisors who need client-ready tax observations at volume, priced by household — Basic Tax starts at $749/yr for 30 households.
- Tax Planner Pro — the pick for a business owner and their accountant working from live QuickBooks or Xero data rather than from a return.
- Intuit Tax Advisor — the pick if your returns already live in ProConnect — the plan is generated from data the engine has, with nothing to re-key.
- Canopy — the pick when you want planning attached to the platform that already holds the client record, rather than a separate planning tool.
- Corvee — not an alternative any more. The official page states plainly: "Corvee is now an Instead company."
How we ranked these tools
We compared all six (and Instead itself) on public documentation and vendor pricing pages in August 2026. Disclosure: deciqAI is our own product — it's marked as our pick, it competes for the same budget, and its "main limitation" names the exact thing Instead does better.
The comparison changed underneath this question
Corvee and Instead used to be the two names people weighed against each other. They aren't two names any more — corvee.com now redirects to instead.com/corvee, where the FAQ says "Corvee is now an Instead company." Any list still ranking them as rivals is out of date, so we say so first.
Does the plan end in an action, or a document?
Planning tools are judged on strategy count and plan quality. That measures the output, not the outcome. We separated tools that produce a client-ready document from tools that carry each item through to a named action, an owner, and a signature — because the second is where planning work usually dies.
What the pricing actually scales with
These tools scale on different axes and it changes who they suit: Holistiplan by household count, Canopy by seat plus per-client credits, Instead by consumed credits, deciqAI by flat subscription. A per-seat comparison across them would be meaningless, so each entry states its own axis.
Pricing from the vendor's own page
Every figure was read off the vendor's published pricing page in August 2026. Two vendors on this list do not publish a number at all and one blocked automated retrieval — in each case we say so and link out rather than repeat an aggregator's estimate.
The alternatives at a glance
| Platform | Starting price | Best for | Key differentiator | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| deciqAI | $30/mo (chat free) | Firms whose problem is that plans get produced but never executed | Every item carries a dollar figure, a named action, and a CPA signature step | No 1,500-strategy library and no multi-entity planning modelling |
| Holistiplan | Basic Tax from $749/yr (30 households) · Premium from $1,499/yr | Advisors producing client-ready tax observations at volume | Return scanning into a branded plan document, priced by household count | Household-tiered pricing scales with book size; advisor-shaped rather than firm-workflow shaped |
| Tax Planner Pro | Listed at taxplannerpro.com | Small business owners and their accountant working from the books | Connects to QuickBooks Online and Xero and projects from live financials | Lighter than Instead on multi-entity and multi-year strategy modelling |
| Intuit Tax Advisor | Bundled with ProConnect Tax — see vendor | Firms already preparing returns in ProConnect | Plans generated from return data already in the tax engine | Strongest only if you are already an Intuit shop |
| Canopy | Standard $74/user/mo (annual) · Tax Workflow Automation from $34/client credit | Firms that want planning attached to practice management | Planning workflow embedded in the platform that already holds the client record | A practice platform first — planning depth is not its centre of gravity |
| Corvee | Now an Instead company | Existing Corvee customers | Not an alternative — corvee.com now redirects to Instead | If you were shopping Corvee against Instead, that comparison no longer exists |
Instead itself: a free platform tier with unlimited users, entities and e-file, plus an agent billed in consumed credits whose price is not published — the site directs credit pricing to sales. Every figure on this page was read off the vendor's own pricing page in August 2026.
The alternatives, in depth
deciqAIOur pick (and our product)
Best for: Firms where plans get produced and then stall
Every other tool here competes on the quality and count of strategies. deciqAI competes on what happens after the plan exists, because that is where this work usually dies: the document is delivered, the client agrees in principle, and December arrives with nothing done. Each item carries the exposure in dollars, the specific action, whether the owner or the accountant performs it, and a signature step that closes it. Three rules hold the numbers honest — figures are exposure, never a projected saving; anything the books cannot support is flagged rather than filled in; and nothing client-facing sends without a one-click approval. Built on a knowledge base of 26,724 profiled companies. Disclosure: this is our product — we're not neutral, weigh accordingly.
Main limitation: No 1,500-strategy library, no multi-entity or multi-year planning modelling, and no branded plan document to hand a client. If what you want is breadth of strategies to choose from, Instead is deeper and this is the wrong tool.
Holistiplan
Best for: Advisors producing client-ready tax observations across a book
The strongest fit for the advisor motion rather than the tax-firm motion: scan a return, produce a branded, readable observation document, repeat across the household book. Pricing tiers by household count in both Basic and Premium, with monthly equivalents and roughly 16% off for annual terms, so cost tracks book size instead of staff count.
Main limitation: Household-tiered pricing means growth costs more in steps rather than smoothly, and the shape is advisor-facing — it produces observations for a client conversation, not firm workflow or execution tracking.
Tax Planner Pro
Best for: Business owners and their accountant working from live books
Connects directly to QuickBooks Online and Xero and projects the tax position from live financials rather than from a filed return, which makes it the natural pick when the client is an operating business and the useful question is what to change before year-end. It sits closer to the owner than the firm-platform tools on this list.
Main limitation: Lighter than Instead on multi-entity and multi-year strategy modelling. Its pricing page blocked automated retrieval when we checked in August 2026, so we link to it rather than quote a figure we could not read at the source.
Intuit Tax Advisor
Best for: Firms whose returns already live in ProConnect
Generates client tax plans from return data already sitting in the Intuit engine. The advantage is narrow but real: no re-keying, no export step, and no second source of truth for the numbers the plan is built on. For a firm already standardized on ProConnect that removes most of the friction other planning tools introduce.
Main limitation: Its value is almost entirely a function of already being an Intuit shop. We did not find a standalone published price separate from the ProConnect subscription, so treat cost as part of that decision rather than an independent one.
Canopy
Best for: Firms wanting planning attached to practice management
Not a planning specialist, but the planning happens where the client record, documents and tasks already are — which for some firms outweighs depth. Tax Workflow Automation is a consumption add-on layered on the per-seat tier, so the cost moves on two axes as you use it.
Main limitation: Planning is a module on a practice platform rather than the product itself. Against a dedicated planning tool it will feel shallow, and the two-axis pricing makes the real annual cost harder to predict.
Corvee
Best for: Existing Corvee customers checking what changed
Included here only to answer the question people are actually searching. Corvee is no longer an independent alternative to Instead: corvee.com redirects to instead.com/corvee, where the FAQ states "Corvee is now an Instead company" and says existing accounts, data and workflows continue unchanged.
Main limitation: It cannot be weighed against Instead, because it is part of Instead. If a comparison page still ranks them as rivals, it has not been updated.
Honest note: if what you want is a large library of strategies to model across entities and years, Instead is deeper than anything on this list including us. The reason to look elsewhere is a different problem — a plan that never became actions, a household book rather than a firm, or books rather than returns as the starting point.
Which alternative fits your actual problem
"We produce good plans and nothing gets done"
Our pick: deciqAI
This is the failure mode planning software is structurally bad at, because the product ends when the plan is delivered. deciqAI treats the plan as the start: each item carries the exposure in dollars, the specific action, whether the owner or the accountant does it, and a signature step that closes it. Three disciplines make that safe — figures are exposure, never a projected saving; anything the books cannot support is marked rather than filled in; and nothing client-facing goes out without a one-click approval.
"We're advisors, not a tax firm"
Our pick: Holistiplan
Holistiplan is built for the advisor motion: scan the return, produce a branded observation document a client can read, repeat across the book. Pricing is by household — Basic Tax from $749/yr at 30 households up to $11,049/yr at 750, Premium from $1,499/yr — so it scales with book size rather than headcount, which fits an advisory practice better than a seat-priced platform.
"Our client is a business owner and the answer is in the books"
Our pick: Tax Planner Pro
Return-driven tools start from what already happened. Tax Planner Pro connects to QuickBooks Online and Xero and projects from live financials, which is the right shape when the client is an operating business and the question is what to do before year-end rather than what the last return showed.
"We already prepare everything in ProConnect"
Our pick: Intuit Tax Advisor
If the return data is already in the Intuit engine, generating the plan from that same data removes a re-keying step and a whole class of transcription error. This is the least interesting answer if you are not an Intuit shop, and the most obvious one if you are.
"We want planning inside the platform we already run on"
Our pick: Canopy
Canopy's Tax Workflow Automation starts at $34 per client credit on top of a Standard tier at $74/user/mo annual, and it sits in the platform that already holds the client record, documents and tasks. Planning depth is not its centre of gravity, but attachment to the existing workflow sometimes matters more than depth.
"How does Corvee compare to Instead now?"
Our pick: Neither — they're one company
It doesn't. corvee.com redirects to instead.com/corvee, and the FAQ there states "Corvee is now an Instead company," with existing accounts, data and workflows continuing unchanged. If you arrived here comparing the two, the real question is what to weigh Instead against — which is the rest of this list.
FAQ
Is Corvee the same as Instead?
They are now one company. corvee.com redirects to instead.com/corvee, where the FAQ states "Corvee is now an Instead company" and notes that existing accounts, data and workflows continue unchanged. Comparison pages that still present them as competing products are out of date.
How much does Instead cost?
Instead publishes a free platform tier with unlimited users, unlimited entities and unlimited e-file and print filing, and charges for its agent through consumed credits covering tax research, document extraction, memos and plans, workflows and return preparation. It does not publish credit prices — the site says credit pricing depends on volume and directs you to sales — so the practical cost is quote-only.
What is the best alternative to Instead for tax planning?
It depends on which half you need. For advisor-facing client-ready plans across a household book: Holistiplan, from $749/yr at 30 households. For an operating business where the answer is in live QuickBooks or Xero data: Tax Planner Pro. If your returns are already in ProConnect: Intuit Tax Advisor. If you want planning inside your practice platform: Canopy. If the problem is that plans get produced but never executed: deciqAI, from $30/mo.
Why do tax plans so often fail to get implemented?
Because most planning software's job ends when the plan is delivered. The document names strategies but not who performs each one, by when, or what closes it, so the work returns to a person's memory. Tools that carry each item to a named action, an owner and a signature step address a different failure than tools competing on strategy count.
Do these tools estimate how much tax I'll save?
Most present an estimated saving, and that number is a projection built on assumptions about what you will actually do. deciqAI deliberately does not print one: it reports exposure — what is at risk if something is missed — because an exposure figure can be traced to source documents while a projected saving cannot. Educational content, not tax advice.
